Alan Newberg painted this mural of historic Bremerton in the heart of the downtown business district . It depicts a scene of the halcyon days of the city as it was in the late 1940's, showing a bustling Pacific Avenue between Burwell and 4th avenues, looking north. Prominent in the scene is the Navy Yard Produce open market then operated by the Soriano Family and the National Bank of Commerce that dominated this segment of Pacific Avenue. In the sky is an airplane pulling a banner anouncing Harry Truman who gave his "Give them Hell Harry" campaign speech here in 1948.
The National Bank of Commerce Building is now owned by the Soriano family and is the building upon which the mural is painted. Today Hudson Photography, Peninsula Services and the Collective Visions Gallery of Art occupy the street level of this building. The mural is on the north side of the Soriano Building facing 4th Avenue in an 12 x 18 ft. recessed panel in the marble veneer that survives from the days when this was a bank.
